SUPERSEDED: ACCESS-CM2 model output for partially coupled tropical Pacific Ocean simulation

Updated: 2024-11-01

This dataset collection comprises output from the ACCESS-CM2 model for tropical partially coupled (or pacemaker-style) experiments. In this project, the ACCESS-CM2 is used to conduct simulations in which sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the tropical Indian and Pacific Ocean basins are restored to a 12-month repeating climatology derived from a pre-industrial control (piControl) simulation. These experiments are designed to quantify the relative impacts of suppressing interannual SST variations in individual tropical ocean basins (Indian or Pacific) and in the combined Indo-Pacific region. The collection includes four experiments: Control run (CTRL): a baseline fully coupled piControl run Indian Ocean climatology (IO_clim_mod): SSTs in the tropical Indian basin restored to CTRL climatology Pacific Ocean climatology (PO_clim_mod): SSTs in the tropical Pacific basin restored to CTRL climatology Indo-Pacific climatology (IPO_clim_mod): SSTs across both the tropical Pacific and Indian basins restored to CTRL climatology This dataset comprises output from the ACCESS-CM2 model for a tropical Pacific Ocean partially coupled (or pacemaker-style) experiment. In this experiment, sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the tropical Pacific Ocean are restored to a 12-month repeating climatology constructed from 150 years (years 1000-1149) of a fully coupled pre-industrial control (piControl) simulation (CTRL). The SST restoring region spans 15°S to 15°N, with a linear taper applied over 10° latitude bands extending to 25°S/N. The restoring timescale is set to 3 days over the 10 m ocean surface layer, equivalent to a 15-day timescale over a 50 m depth. Outside the restoring region, the ocean, as well as the atmosphere and sea ice components, evolve freely in response to this partial assimilation in the Pacific Ocean, with forcings consistent with piControl conditions as in CTRL. The output was post-processed using the ACCESS-MOPPeR tool (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10346217) following wherever possible the CMIP6 conventions. This dataset was decommissioned in 2024 when the experiment was re-published as part of CMIP6Plus: https://geonetwork.nci.org.au/geonetwork/srv/eng/catalog.search#/metadata/f0594_2818_4069_4626
