Biological consequences of a changing Southern Annular Mode

Published: 2026-06-11

This record provides the supporting data for a systematic review assessing biological responses associated with the Southern Annular Mode (SAM) and related environmental pathways across Southern Hemisphere ecosystems. The dataset summarises the literature screening records and extracted study-level information used to identify, classify and synthesise studies included in the review. This dataset was prepared by Yifan Wu in 2026. FILE: SAM_biota_GCB_review_screening records.xlsx This Excel file contains four worksheets: “Sheet 1: Information” – provides a detailed description of methods, terms and abbreviations. “Sheet 2: Rayyan screening result” – records the initial screening decisions based on article titles and abstracts. “Sheet 3: Forward citation result” – records additional studies identified by forward citation searches of identified review papers. “Sheet 4: Final result” – records studies assessed after full-text review “Sheet 5: Robinson and Erickson 2015 result”– records relevant studies identified from Robinson and Erickson (2015). Where available, the workbook includes bibliographic information such as article titles, publication years, authors and DOIs. These records document the screening process and provide traceability for the final set of studies included in the review. FILE: SAM_biota_GCB_review_information summary.xlsx This Excel file contains four worksheets: “Sheet 1: Information” – provides a detailed description of methods, terms and abbreviations. “Sheet 2: Terrestrial biota” “Sheet 3: Marine phytoplankton and invertebrates” “Sheet 4: Marine vertebrates” For each study, the workbook records the study identifier, publication year, study period, location, coordinates or spatial extent, biological response type, evidence category, and environmental mediators. The evidence categories identify whether studies reported direct relationships between SAM and biological responses, indirect relationships mediated through environmental variables, or both direct and indirect pathways. This workbook was used to support the synthesis and visualisation of study locations, biological responses, environmental mediators and evidence pathways presented in Figures 2, 3 and 4 of the review.
